Returning Officer rejects objection by PAS
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Par t i Se-Islam Malaysia (PAS) had hoped to win the Muara Tuang Constituency uncontested on Nomination Day yesterday.
Its representatives objected to the nomination of Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate by alleging that he had failed to submit his financial statement.
However, the EC showed proof that it had been sent.
The PAS’ hope was dashed when its objection was rejected by the Returning Officer.
The announcement of the candidates for the constituency was supposed to be made at noon.Because of the objection, it was delayed for almost one and half hours and only made by the Returning Officer, Mohd Aini Wahab at 1.20pm.
Muara Tuang will see a straight fight between BN candidate, Dato’ Seri Haji Mohammad Ali Mahmud, 61, and PAS’ candidate Noraini binte Hamzah,49.
Ali, a businessman, is defending the Muara Tuang seat while Noraini, who hails from Kelantan, is married to a local.
Ali, whose nomination was proposed by Brahim bin Latep and seconded by Lawrence Pau, submitted his nomination paper at 9.25am.
Noraini’s nomination was proposed by Mansor bin Julai and seconded by Awg Udin bin Awg Togo; she submitted her nomination paper at 9.10am.
Earlier on, at 9am, more than 2,000 BN supporters marched to the nomination centre at Kota Samarahan Civic Centre while the PAS candidate and her supporters arrived at the nomination centre earlier.

Among the PA S l e a d e r s accompanying their candidate to the nomination centre were Mahfuz Omar, Dato’ Seri Mohammed Nizar Jamaluddin and Mohamed Sabu.
When interviewed, Ali pointed out that the Samarahan areas, particularly Muara Tuang and Asajaya were strongholds of BN under Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
“I am confident we will be able to repeat our past victory and there is possibility that we may even be able to increase our majority votes,” he said.
Shafie, who was also interviewed after the nomination, was confident that BN would retain the seat again.
He said the land issues raised by the opposition had been overcome.
“Other than that, there is no big problem,” said Shafie.
