Mozilla Firefox recruiting contributors
KUCHING: Mozilla Firefox, a well known and widely used web browser is planning to set foot in the state by recruiting local contributors to make the web browser more user-friendly and community-based.
A representative of Malaysia Mozilla and Mozilla Web Programmer, Hilary Ho Jia Hao, 21, when met by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday said the recruitment is open to everyone who has interest in making the web browser more local based with no limitation on the recruitment as long as they are able to contribute.
A student of Cognitive Science at Univerisiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Ho revealed that there are more than 40,000 people in the world who are involved in it.
“Our neighbouring country, Indonesia, currently has seven Mozilla representatives and still growing,” he said, adding that the Mozilla community in Malaysia was still at its infancy where only two groups were formed a few months ago.
The organisation that Mozilla is trying to set up is a non-profit one where the members get to share the same Mozilla code to make the web browser.
Mozilla Firefox fits into the society as every society has its own unique culture and language.
“There is no one size fits all. Therefore, after the methophore, Mozilla also known as Open Source for development is an opportunity for the people to play their role to contribute to the society because in the era of technology contributions cannot only be done physically but also in abstract forms which are gradually gaining popularity overseas.
“By joining the Malaysian Mozilla community it is like contributing to the society with the expertise of each individual based on the skills that they have and they can actually gain real life experiences by exposing themselves to the high tech of web browser.
“There are many things that an individual can do by becoming a member of the community. It features a lot of sections for instance, programming, HTML web building, reporting local news and other potential sections as the community grows,” he said.
Ho also said that the Mozilla Firefox that we use now is in English whereas Indonesia has their version in Bahasa Indonesia.
“It is about time that we make our own version of Mozilla Firefox in Bahasa Malaysia and to feature our nation’s culture,” he said, adding that the community is applying its expertise to help others to have better browsing experience.
“Hence, every source code (programming) is shared so that the programmers can make it more efficient for the nation’s use which if the programme fits other parts of the world, Mozilla will make use of it to fit in the needs which will enhance the confidence of the programmers and also helps the people to get a higher level of technology,” Ho said.
“Many people know about window programming where they have to buy the licence whereas Open Source from Mozilla is free. Those who know can modify or create their own version of ‘window’ that can fit the individual or community.
Mozilla not only focuses on the web but also on phone application as well where nowadays people tend to communicate via the Internet and smart phone which makes communication much easier,” he said.
