PTA holds parenting programme for teachers, parents

KUCHING: A parenting programme that brought teachers and parents together to discuss on the welfare of their children in school was held at the Penview Inn yesterday.
The programme, organised by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of SMK Demak Baru Kuching, saw the presence of Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datin Hajah Fatimah Abdullah and Samariang state assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
Speaking at the event , Fatimah touched on factors that caused social issues among students, and how schools and teachers could change the environment to make learning more enjoyable to benefit the students.
“Besides giving attention to the development of their children’s education, parents should also pay close attention to the social development of their children,” she said, adding that in today’s environment, the lifestyle of children was always changing.
“It is time to increase the funds for PTAs so that they could focus on developing the human capital,” said Fatimah.
She encouraged students to be a part of the growing technical workforce.
“Students who are not strong in the academic field have the opportunities to develop their technical skills as this was equally important,” she said in reference to SCORE, the core foundation of which would depend on this technical group.
“Parents should change their mindset on technical and vocational education,” she told about 40 parents who attended the programme.
Fatimah said that at the moment, only 23 percent of the total workforce were highly skilled workers, who should be the fundamentals for achieving a high income economy.
She assured that the government, through the Ministry of Education, would be taking a more holistic approach to strengthen the training and education system.
Also present was the principal of SMK Demak Baru, Rambli bin Haji Hasbi, the s c h o o l ’s PTA Cha i rman Busman bin Haji Ramli, Ustaz Saberi bin Abdul Wahid, a representative of JAKIM, Sarawak branch and the Principal of SMA Pesantran, Junaidi bin Haji Zulkipli.
